Most people know him these days as Santa Bill, but for Bill, portraying Santa Claus isn’t just a seasonal gig — it’s a calling. He truly embodies the spirit of Christmas, spreading joy, love, and peace wherever he goes. I’ve seen it firsthand — watching my son, niece, and nephews light up when they meet him, utterly convinced they’re with the real Santa.

Even when we travel together outside of the holiday season, children recognize him instantly — no red suit required. Adults, too, are often quick to ask if he’s the Santa from Macy’s. On our last trip to New York City, three different theatre professionals approached him out of nowhere, asking that very question. I always tell him to reply, “I’m the real Santa Claus,” because to me — and to so many others — he truly is.

Beyond the beard and the bells, Bill is a talented and seasoned performer. A graduate of Wittenberg University with a B.A. in Theatre and Dance, he has been captivating audiences since childhood. His skills span music, theatre, and dance — he plays piano, guitar, accordion, banjo (by ear), and sings both lead and tenor. Trained in ballet and tap, his dancing days have slowed a bit due to past ankle injuries, but his stage presence remains magnetic.

Bill’s theatrical range is impressive — from performing in drag as his beloved character Iona Trailer, to bringing to life a variety of Santa personas: St. Nicholas, Old World Santa, 18th-Century Storyteller Santa, even Scottish Santa and Cowboy Santa. Each version carries its own charm, heart, and authenticity.

This year, Bill shared his Christmas magic on an even larger stage. He auditioned for the role of Kris Kringle in the first national tour of Meredith Willson’s Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical. The casting director loved his audition tape and invited him to New York City for in-person callbacks — a huge honor for any performer. Though he wasn’t cast this time, every person he met that day saw the same sparkle in his eye and felt the unmistakable warmth of his Christmas spirit.
Because that’s who Bill is — not just Central Ohio’s Singing Santa, but the real deal.
